If confidence were a draft strategy, the Packers would have aced it. Cedric Gray at pick No. 88 is 36 spots clear of where he belonged.
With quarterback and wide receiver unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the Round 1 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Mike Sainristil at slot 58, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaden Hicks at pick No. 76 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cedric Gray in pick 88, miles early. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Renardo Green adds a safety and leaves quarterback and wide receiver untouched.
They liked Fabien Lovett enough to skip the value, taking him in the 127th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Isaac Guerendo at the 168th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Erick All in the 204th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Garret Greenfield at No. 216 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Evan Williams at pick No. 237 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Solomon Byrd well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Blake Watson in slot 251 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
