You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Wallace pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 10 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 24 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, Zach Frazier went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Gabriel Murphy at the 87th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A straight-up fair deal on Jarrian Jones at Round 4, Pick 35, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jordan Jefferson at pick 174 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach for Trevin Wallace in pick No. 216; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Josh Proctor at the 233rd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Bub Means in No. 244 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
