You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Jaylan Ford in No. 174. Put together, it is a D-.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. That Dixon pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 9 they get a building block for the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick No. 24 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jermaine Burton in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Braelon Allen at Round 3, Pick 24 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tommy Eichenberg in pick 129 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylan Ford well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Julian Pearl, who had no business lasting to pick No. 216. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Solomon Byrd at slot 230, well ahead of any board in the building. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Johnny Dixon at No. 233 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Trevin Wallace slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
