Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent pick No. 174 on Jaden Crumedy, a name the board had a full 52 spots lower.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Brian Thomas Jr. in the 24th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Zach Frazier in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Will Shipley at Round 3, Pick 24, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cedric Gray at pick No. 108 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaden Crumedy well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Magee at pick 216, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Bub Means in the 233rd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Myles Harden was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
