The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Commanders reached some 55 spots for Ben Sinnott, and value like that does not grow back. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
The Washington pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Kaleb McGary deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 27 they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
They let Amarius Mims come to them and pounced at the 33rd overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: Michael Penix Jr. at No. 36 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tyler Guyton in the 39th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kamari Lassiter at Round 2, Pick 8 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Adonai Mitchell was the payoff at pick 43. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 65 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Max Melton at slot 67 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ben Sinnott at pick 74 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Xavier Legette in Round 3, Pick 14, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cam Hart in pick No. 100 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A quiet steal in the 101st overall pick: Dadrion Taylor-Demerson for less than the market said. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Malik Washington at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let a cornerback like Caelen Carson reach the 139th pick and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Isaac Guerendo is a better player than the 143rd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Trevor Keegan in pick 152 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Fabien Lovett at pick No. 187 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Steele Chambers in No. 222 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
