The rest of the league will want that one back. Brashard Smith tumbling to the Cowboys in pick No. 186 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. It grades a D+, and the process earned it.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Shedeur Sanders gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. If Griffith pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Shedeur Sanders. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
In pick 12 they get a lead back with juice, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach Round 2, Pick 12 and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A quiet steal in pick No. 76: Jalen Royals for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Maxwell Hairston in slot 101. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A safety of that caliber at the 148th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Taking Jake Majors in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Dont'e Thornton Jr. went about where he belonged in No. 170. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Smael Mondon Jr. in the 173rd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Brashard Smith at pick 186 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Connor Colby here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A big swing on Thor Griffith at slot 248, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
