The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
The whole projection now runs through Drake Maye; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Landing Jackson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value.
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They will replay Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 56th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jeremiah Trotter Jr.. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Trey Benson at No. 87 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Khristian Boyd at pick 174, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Taking Jha'Quan Jackson in slot 216 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Gabe Hall is a better player than the 233rd pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and Tayvion Robinson was the payoff at pick No. 244. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
