You build a draft on nights like this. Anthony Gould had no business being available in slot 203, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They will need McCarthy to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get their guy under center for the next decade, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at No. 56 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Mike Sainristil in the 76th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Calen Bullock at the 87th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They let Dylan Laube come to them and pounced at pick 174. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Anthony Gould at Round 6, Pick 28 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Curtis Jacobs at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Garret Greenfield at slot 233 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tayvion Robinson is a better player than pick No. 244 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
