The Cowboys spent real capital to be 94 picks early on Jordan Jefferson, and the board is going to hold them to it.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. King falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
In the 18th overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In No. 24 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick 43 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Amarius Mims here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Adonai Mitchell all the way to pick No. 56, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Junior Colson at the 57th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A quiet steal in pick No. 72: Jonathon Brooks for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Kalen King at the 74th pick for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach on Braden Fiske in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jordan Jefferson in No. 87 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Khyree Jackson at pick 88 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Jaden Hicks, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 24. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jaylan Ford at slot 203 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jase McClellan at slot 212 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Maurice Smith at the 254th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
