The Cowboys lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Johnson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They took Jordan Morgan at par in slot 37, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Payton Wilson at the 56th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ja'Lynn Polk in the 69th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Leonard Taylor III at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dillon Johnson at pick 173 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 213, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Josh Proctor slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They read the board right and Tayvion Robinson was the payoff at pick No. 242. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
