The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
So much rides on Bo Nix that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
The Dixon pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Reaching for Johnson left real value on the table behind him.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Olumuyiwa Fashanu in Round 1, Pick 11. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 24th overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at No. 56 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Trey Benson at par in slot 87, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cornelius Johnson a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaden Crumedy in the 216th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Johnny Dixon in pick No. 233 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow JD Bertrand was still sitting there in the 244th pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
