You build a draft on nights like this. Jaxson Dart had no business being available in the 154th pick, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
Everything downstream of Carson Beck depends on Carson Beck, and the building knows it. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The Key pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 31 they get a workhorse for the backfield. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Tory Horton went about where he belonged in No. 60. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Josh Simmons at the 90th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jacobee Bryant in slot 95 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They read the board right and Smael Mondon Jr. was the payoff at the 122nd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Antwane Wells Jr. at pick 124 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Jaxson Dart at pick No. 154 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Dane Key a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
RJ Harvey in the Round 6 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
