You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
Whatever Carson Beck becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Umanmielen.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get an every-down engine for the run game at fair value. A real need, handled.
Nothing to complain about; Elic Ayomanor went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Princely Umanmielen at pick No. 68 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Quincy Riley at Round 3, Pick 30 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 126 with a little surplus value in Jack Kiser. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Marques Cox at the 158th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at pick 190 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Jalon Daniels is a better player than the Round 7 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
