Somebody in the 158th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Tre Harris, the No. 44 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Carson Beck is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value.
In slot 30 they get a potential shutdown corner at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Evan Stewart in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Quinshon Judkins at Round 2, Pick 30 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Emery Jones in pick 68 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Walter Nolen at No. 94 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Sebastian Castro in the 126th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They robbed the room for Tre Harris here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jason Henderson at pick No. 190 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quarterback of that caliber at slot 222 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
