You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
The whole projection now runs through Carson Beck; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Smith pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
The Giddens value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a downhill hitter at safety, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Tez Johnson in pick 64 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Donovan Jackson in the 68th pick, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Jacobee Bryant in pick No. 94, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A slide stopped in slot 126, with DJ Giddens worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tim Smith at Round 5, Pick 30 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
Xavian Sorey Jr. slipping to the 190th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Ali Jennings went about where he belonged in pick 222. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
