Somebody took the Cowboys to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here. On value alone, Wilson makes the weekend a net positive.
They will need McCarthy to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 8 they get a long-term starter on the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 24 they get the arm they will build around, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
A reach for Kingsley Suamataia in Round 2, Pick 16; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in pick 59, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Michael Hall Jr. at the 79th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Cooper Beebe for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Isaac Guerendo in No. 108 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Cedric Gray in the 122nd pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Johnny Wilson all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tahj Washington in slot 216 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Josh Proctor at No. 233 is a fall that decides a draft. A minor itch, scratched.
You do not let a running back like Daijun Edwards reach pick 238 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tayvion Robinson slid further than he should have, and the 244th pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
