You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Jayden Daniels is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Lovett.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 7 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 9 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy little value on Kingsley Suamataia in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kris Abrams-Draine in No. 75 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 99 with a little surplus value in Trey Benson. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Fabien Lovett in the 173rd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jaylan Ford at Round 6, Pick 38 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Garret Greenfield slipping to the 231st pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They let Tayvion Robinson come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 22. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Evan Williams went about where he belonged in No. 246. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
