Dallas Cowboys

Daniels is the plan now, and the Cowboys grade out a F.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

Jayden Daniels is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Lovett.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 7
In pick 7 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.9 · Pick 9 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 9
In slot 9 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 57
A tidy little value on Kingsley Suamataia in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 78
Kris Abrams-Draine in No. 75 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 96
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 99 with a little surplus value in Trey Benson. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 145
Fabien Lovett in the 173rd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.38 · Pick 213 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 196
Jaylan Ford at Round 6, Pick 38 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Garret Greenfield · OT · rank 220
Garret Greenfield slipping to the 231st pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Tayvion Robinson · WR · rank 234
They let Tayvion Robinson come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 22. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Evan Williams · S · rank 245
No drama and no debate, Evan Williams went about where he belonged in No. 246. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
