You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The whole projection now runs through Jayden Daniels; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The Byrd pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They banked enough surplus on Jacobs to cover a lot of smaller sins.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 24 they get a building block for the line, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
DJ James at the 56th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jaylen Wright at pick 68 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Devontez Walker slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 24 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Hunter Nourzad at No. 174 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Curtis Jacobs at pick No. 216 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Trevin Wallace at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid a round early for Solomon Byrd in pick No. 244, more than the board wanted. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
