The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Bucky Irving, the No. 91 name on the board, in pick 174. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kool-Aid McKinstry at the Round 2 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Xavier Worthy at pick No. 68 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Graham Barton in the 87th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Bucky Irving was still sitting there in pick 174, and they pounced on premier running back value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Dillon Johnson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Tatum Bethune in slot 233 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They let Trevin Wallace come to them and pounced at No. 244. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
