You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. However the rest shakes out, Jacobs at that price is a win they earned. The Justin Fields deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 9th pick they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Malachi Corley went about where he belonged in slot 56. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Gabriel Murphy in pick No. 87, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Isaac Guerendo at the 112th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Beaux Limmer at par in pick 123, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jalyx Hunt at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster logic is harder to follow.
A quiet steal in No. 213: Curtis Jacobs for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Michael Barrett at the 231st overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had Tayvion Robinson higher than Round 7, Pick 22, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good price on Jordan Whittington in pick 253, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
