The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Johnson. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
They took Amarius Mims at par in the 24th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nothing to complain about; Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on DJ James. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ainias Smith at pick 136 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a safety like Beau Brade reach slot 173 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They robbed the room for Jordan Jefferson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 7 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cornelius Johnson in the 231st pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tayvion Robinson is a better player than pick No. 242 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
