Dallas Cowboys

The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D+.

Future A+

The Cowboys went off the board in a big way for Joe Milton III, 43 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.

That McClellan pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Connor McGovern pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Joe Alt · OT · rank 4
The board fumbled Joe Alt all the way to Round 1, Pick 23, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Laiatu Latu · DL-EDGE · rank 11
In the 24th overall pick they get juice off the edge, and a steal at that.
R1.28 · Pick 28 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 55
In slot 28 they get a true top target, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 45
They let T'Vondre Sweat come to them and pounced at pick 56. The roster fit checks out.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 107
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in pick No. 87 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 95
Value with a capital V on Khyree Jackson in the 108th pick, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · James Williams · LB · rank 124
Fair-plus on James Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Hunter Nourzad · C · rank 157
Value said wait; Hunter Nourzad in pick No. 132 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
Joe Milton III in pick 157 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 198
Curtis Jacobs at slot 159 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 184
Jordan Jefferson in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 196
Jase McClellan in Round 6, Pick 41 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Ryan Watts · CB · rank 260
A big swing on Ryan Watts at No. 230, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Nathan Thomas · OT · rank 227
Good price on Nathan Thomas in the 233rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.24 · Pick 244 · De'Corian Clark · WR · rank 276
De'Corian Clark at Round 7, Pick 24 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
