If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cowboys would have aced it. Zion Logue at No. 230 is 56 spots clear of where he belonged. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
The Williams value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 19 they get a long-term starter on the line, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 23 they get a true top target, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
They reached into another round for Trey Benson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
They liked Khyree Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 87. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A wild overpay on Michael Pratt in the 90th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They jumped the gun on Johnny Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Jordan Jefferson at pick No. 132, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: James Williams still on the board at the Round 5 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jalyx Hunt in Round 5, Pick 23 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A straight-up fair deal on Marist Liufau at slot 162, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; Isaiah Davis at the 174th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had Julian Pearl higher than pick 216, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Ryan Watts in the 226th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zion Logue. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A big swing on Sam Hartman at No. 233, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Matthew Jones this early at the 244th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
