The war room fell hard for J.J. Weaver, and it showed at Round 6, Pick 6: 136 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
However the rest shakes out, Johnson at that price is a win they earned. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick 23 they get a matchup problem out wide at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A real head-scratcher, Jaylen Wright in slot 37 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Beaux Limmer at pick No. 69 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
AJ Barner in No. 105 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cedric Gray. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A big swing on Fabien Lovett at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
J.J. Weaver at the 181st pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Cornelius Johnson all the way to No. 225, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Sheridan Jones here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
