Los Angeles Chargers

Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Chargers: C+.

The AJ Barner selection is the head-turner. The Chargers reached 33 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

Lassiter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 32
In slot 11 they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 45
In the 23rd overall pick they get a wrecking ball inside, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 57
This one needs a full-page explanation: Payton Wilson in pick 37, miles early. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Kamari Lassiter · CB · rank 41
Steal is underselling it; Kamari Lassiter at the 69th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 97
MarShawn Lloyd at No. 90 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
They read the board right and Brenden Rice was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 171
AJ Barner at the 138th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 125
Johnny Wilson at pick No. 140 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
Joe Milton III at Round 6, Pick 6 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 252
A wild overpay on LaDarius Henderson in No. 225, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 235
Michael Barrett at slot 253 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
