The Raiders spent the pick that matters most on Fernando Mendoza, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

Every board in the league had Capehart lower, and that gap is the story. Getting Haulcy where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.

The Haulcy pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, cornerback and other spots.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.1 · Pick 1 · Fernando Mendoza · QB · rank 4
In pick No. 1 they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Anthony Hill Jr. · LB · rank 39
Anthony Hill Jr. in the 55th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Kamari Ramsey · S · rank 78
Kamari Ramsey at slot 67 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, A.J. Haulcy adds a safety and leaves edge rusher, cornerback and other spots untouched.
R3.22 · Pick 86 · Dontay Corleone · DT · rank 70
They read the board right and Dontay Corleone was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 138
A wild overpay on DeMonte Capehart in Round 4, Pick 2, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · J.C. Davis · OT · rank 142
They left a pile of value on the table to take J.C. Davis this early at pick 117. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Malik Benson · WR · rank 147
A reach for Malik Benson in the 134th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.35 · Pick 175 · Caleb Douglas · WR · rank 167
Caleb Douglas slid further than he should have, and slot 175 is lovely value for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.4 · Pick 185 · VJ Payne · S · rank 201
A conviction pick on VJ Payne at pick 185 that the board grades a round light. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R6.27 · Pick 208 · Kaelon Black · RB · rank 227
They reached a country mile for Kaelon Black at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Jimmy Rolder · LB · rank 231
They liked Jimmy Rolder enough to skip the value, taking him in the 219th overall pick. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
