The war room fell hard for Elijah Simmons, and it showed at pick No. 226: 97 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
In the end it comes back to Taliese Fuaga, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 16 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Bralen Trice in slot 37, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Mike Sainristil at pick 81 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 105, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Ben Sinnott in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Barrett at the 183rd pick, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Elijah Simmons in the 226th overall pick, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
