You build a draft on nights like this. Connor Lew had no business being available in pick No. 103, and the Chargers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Every board in the league had Young lower, and that gap is the story.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid up for Zion Young at Round 2, Pick 1 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at slot 43 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor itch, scratched.
Chase Bisontis in pick No. 75 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Connor Lew at the 103rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Julian Neal in the Round 4 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Parker Brailsford at pick 130, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on DeMonte Capehart. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Josh Cameron at the 204th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
