The J.J. Weaver selection is the head-turner. The Chargers reached 136 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Lloyd steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · JC Latham · OT · rank 15
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 32
In the 23rd pick they get a building block for the line, though they paid up to get him.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 45
They paid a round early for T'Vondre Sweat in pick No. 37, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 57
A tidy bit of business in the Round 3 slot, where Payton Wilson graded well above the range. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
A straight-up fair deal on Brenden Rice at the 90th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 97
Nice patience on MarShawn Lloyd, who had no business lasting to pick 110. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 136
No edge and no loss on Jarrian Jones in Round 5, Pick 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 171
They reached into another round for AJ Barner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · J.J. Weaver · LB-EDGE · rank 317
J.J. Weaver at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 235
Michael Barrett in pick No. 225 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · Joshua Cephus · WR · rank 266
A reach for Joshua Cephus in pick 253; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
