The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C-.
On value alone, Jones makes the weekend a net positive. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
Sinnott has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Hit on J.J. McCarthy and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a long-term answer under center, a steep price for the projection.
The board had cheaper options than Roman Wilson at the Round 2 slot, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Chris Braswell went about where he belonged in slot 35. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Patrick Paul in the 66th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cade Stover a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Bucky Irving this early at the 71st overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, Brenden Rice at pick No. 90 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ben Sinnott at Round 4, Pick 4 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A real head-scratcher, Roger Rosengarten in pick No. 125 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach on Tommy Eichenberg in pick 136; the board had better options right there. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They jumped the gun on Joe Milton III, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
A slide stopped in Round 6, Pick 34, with Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Elijah Jones was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
