Chicago Bears

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Bears to a D-.

The rest of the league had time to spare on Marvin Jones Jr.; the Bears did not wait, grabbing him 103 spots ahead at No. 228. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.12 · Pick 44 · Anthony Hill Jr. · LB · rank 38
A reasonable price with a little left over, Anthony Hill Jr. in slot 44. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Caleb Banks · DL · rank 42
Caleb Banks in Round 2, Pick 15 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
A tidy little value on A.J. Haulcy in the 57th pick, a step better than break-even. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 52
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Jacob Rodriguez worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.25 · Pick 89 · Mike Washington Jr. · RB · rank 72
Mike Washington Jr. in pick No. 89 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Devin Moore · CB · rank 95
The board had Devin Moore higher than the 103rd overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Jack Endries · TE · rank 122
They did well to land Jack Endries in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.40 · Pick 140 · Parker Brailsford · C · rank 131
Parker Brailsford slipping to Round 4, Pick 40 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
R5.25 · Pick 165 · Aamil Wagner · OT · rank 177
They went early on Aamil Wagner in No. 165, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.30 · Pick 170 · Patrick Payton · DE-EDGE · rank 257
A wild overpay on Patrick Payton in the 170th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.39 · Pick 179 · Travis Burke · OT · rank 173
Nothing to complain about; Travis Burke went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · VJ Payne · S · rank 200
The board fumbled VJ Payne all the way to pick 220, and they scooped it up. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R7.12 · Pick 228 · Marvin Jones Jr. · LB-EDGE · rank 331
Marvin Jones Jr. at slot 228 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.23 · Pick 239 · TJ Hall · CB · rank 232
TJ Hall at the 239th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.25 · Pick 241 · Robert Spears-Jennings · S · rank 239
Robert Spears-Jennings at the 241st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R7.26 · Pick 242 · Fa'alili Fa'amoe · OT · rank 256
Fa'alili Fa'amoe at No. 242 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.40 · Pick 256 · Dominic Zvada · PK · rank 308
They talked themselves into Dominic Zvada at pick 256, and the board did not agree. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R7.41 · Pick 257 · Bryce Foster · C · rank 261
Bryce Foster in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
