There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Bears started one anyway for Dominic Zvada, 67 picks ahead of schedule.
That Benson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through linebacker. Adding Dexter Lawrence II by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
So much rides on Monroe Freeling that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
Monroe Freeling at No. 37 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Caleb Banks in the Round 2 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Gabe Jacas at Round 2, Pick 30. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Gennings Dunker at the 89th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
The board had Devin Moore higher than slot 105, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Connor Lew all the way to the 111th pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in No. 129, with Nicholas Singleton worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Bishop Fitzgerald was still sitting there in the 145th pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 186 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Nice patience on Febechi Nwaiwu, who had no business lasting to slot 192. The roster fit checks out.
VJ Payne at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A clean, defensible pick in the 239th overall pick with a little surplus value in TJ Hall. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dominic Zvada in pick 241, miles early. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They read the board right and Jaydn Ott was the payoff at Round 7, Pick 41. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
