Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chargers shredded theirs for J.J. Weaver. He came off 92 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
They banked enough surplus on Cowing to cover a lot of smaller sins. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Hit on JC Latham and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection.
In pick No. 23 they get a cornerstone up front at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Value said wait; Payton Wilson in slot 37 says they were not listening. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Taking Roman Wilson in the 69th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, MarShawn Lloyd went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
You do not let a cornerback like Kris Abrams-Draine reach Round 4, Pick 10 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid a round early for Kitan Oladapo in No. 138, more than the board wanted. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They left a pile of value on the table to take AJ Barner this early at the Round 5 slot. It fills a real need, too.
They barely believed it either: Jacob Cowing still on the board at pick 181. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A real head-scratcher, J.J. Weaver in the 225th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Michael Barrett in the 253rd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
