Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chargers shredded theirs for J.J. Weaver. He came off 136 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Sainristil. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a security blanket over the middle. A real need, handled.
In the 23rd pick they get a long-term starter on the line, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
They reached a country mile for Braden Fiske at pick 37, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Payton Wilson at the 69th overall pick is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 90, where Mike Sainristil graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, MarShawn Lloyd at the Round 4 slot. It fills a real need, too.
The board had Johnny Wilson higher than pick 138, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
AJ Barner in No. 140 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, J.J. Weaver in Round 6, Pick 6 is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Evan Williams in slot 225 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid a round early for Joshua Cephus in the 253rd pick, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
