If confidence were a draft strategy, the Chargers would have aced it. J.J. Weaver at pick 181 is 136 spots clear of where he belonged. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a mismatch in the passing game. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 23 they get a blindside protector, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
DeWayne Carter at the 69th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A quiet steal in slot 84: Mike Sainristil for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
MarShawn Lloyd at pick 98 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board had Brenden Rice higher than the 105th pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into AJ Barner at the 110th pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Marist Liufau well ahead of where he belonged. A minor itch, scratched.
J.J. Weaver at the 181st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Frank Gore Jr. in slot 225 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, LaDarius Henderson at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
