The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 47 spots for Joe Milton III, and value like that does not grow back.
They banked enough surplus on Rouse to cover a lot of smaller sins. The Wallace pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end still on the board.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Amarius Mims slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 2 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in the 44th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Max Melton at pick 60 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Michael Hall Jr. in No. 68 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Trey Benson at the 88th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
By-the-book stuff, Roger Rosengarten at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value with a capital V on Christian Mahogany in the 112th pick, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good price on Jarrian Jones in No. 126, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Trevin Wallace in pick No. 133 leaves tight end for later.
Johnny Wilson in pick 137 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Joe Milton III at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid a round early for Cedric Johnson in slot 179, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dominique Hampton at the 192nd overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Walter Rouse in Round 6, Pick 27, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Trey Taylor in the Round 6 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Nick Gargiulo at the 245th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach for Jaylon Carlies in the 255th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
