The Patriots ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided.

With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

Every board in the league had Smith lower, and that gap is the story.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Malik Nabers · WR · rank 4
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Malik Nabers. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 29
Troy Fautanu in No. 34 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 34
Fair-plus on Kamren Kinchens, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 67
They paid a round early for Brenden Rice in pick No. 55, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 73
No edge and no loss on Johnny Wilson in Round 3, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 86
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 99
Blake Fisher at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 85
Steal is underselling it; Caelen Carson at pick No. 105 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · DJ James · CB · rank 114
They zigged when the board said zag, taking DJ James at cornerback with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · James Williams · S · rank 135
They did well to land James Williams in No. 139, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 186
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Baker at slot 180, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
