The Dolphins did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Dolphins spent slot 184 on Nathan Thomas, a name the board had a full 44 spots lower. The bottom line is a respectable B.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Trotter Jr.. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.27 · Pick 27 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 13
In the 27th overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 65
No drama and no debate, Christian Haynes went about where he belonged in slot 59. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 67
Somehow Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was still sitting there in No. 90, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 107
They took Will Shipley at par in Round 3, Pick 37, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 112 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 171
AJ Barner at pick 148 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
No edge and no loss on Dwight McGlothern in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.9 · Pick 184 · Nathan Thomas · OT · rank 228
Nathan Thomas at the 184th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.23 · Pick 198 · Javontae Jean-Baptiste · DE-EDGE · rank 217
They reached into another round for Javontae Jean-Baptiste, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · Keaton Bills · OG · rank 240
A straight-up fair deal on Keaton Bills at pick 241, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
