The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.
Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. If McCarthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 1 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: J.J. McCarthy in pick 9, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Keon Coleman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylen Wright at the 69th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reach on Cedric Gray in the 105th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Roger Rosengarten in Round 5, Pick 4 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A slide stopped in No. 181, with Kamal Hadden worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Andrew Raym in Round 7, Pick 5 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy little value on Jordan Whittington in the 253rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
