Washington Commanders

Williams is the plan now, and the Commanders grade out a D+.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Put together, it is a D+.

So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The cost of the Robinson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

That is an edge rusher worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Caleb Williams · QB · rank 2
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 31
Quinyon Mitchell slipping to pick 40 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 55
Ja'Lynn Polk slid further than he should have, and the 67th pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 77
Cooper Beebe at the Round 3 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 85
The board had Gabriel Murphy higher than the 100th overall pick, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 121
They left a pile of value on the table to take Darius Robinson this early at slot 102. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 133
Good price on Will Shipley in No. 139, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · James Williams · S · rank 134
Nothing to complain about; James Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 177
Jaylan Ford in Round 6, Pick 6 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Jha'Quan Jackson · WR · rank 213
Jha'Quan Jackson is a better player than slot 223 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
