The Steelers torched the value chart for Cole Payton, taking him 51 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They banked enough surplus on Allen to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st pick they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Emmanuel Pregnon in pick 53. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Circle this one: CJ Allen at pick No. 66 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Max Klare in No. 99 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: Michael Taaffe still on the board at the Round 3 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Davison Igbinosun in the 116th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cole Payton at Round 5, Pick 7 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
