Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent slot 231 on Carson Steele, a name most had 92 spots down the list.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. On value alone, Jackson makes the weekend a net positive.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Drake Maye at par in pick No. 3, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Keon Coleman at slot 46 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Calen Bullock at the 103rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Khyree Jackson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They jumped the gun on Luke McCaffrey, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Grayson Murphy in pick No. 180 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Caedan Wallace at slot 193 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Carson Steele at No. 231 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
