The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bears reached some 40 spots for Adam Randall, and value like that does not grow back.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Getting Slaughter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
In No. 29 they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value. More want than need.
Jacob Rodriguez at slot 57 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Christen Miller at par in the 60th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Jake Slaughter still on the board at the 89th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Ja'Kobi Lane in pick No. 129 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Jaeden Roberts in the 148th pick, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Robert Spears-Jennings at pick No. 239 squarely in line with his ranking. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Adam Randall this early at the Round 7 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
