The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Anthony Gould, pick 222, roughly 80 picks past where he belonged. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
Everything downstream of Jayden Daniels depends on Jayden Daniels, and the building knows it. It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.
Solomon has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A real need, handled.
In the 17th overall pick they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid up for T.J. Tampa at pick 40 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Patrick Paul in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A curious use of pick No. 100. Edge rusher, running back and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
A slide stopped in the 144th pick, with Jarrian Jones worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Ty'Ron Hopper still on the board at Round 6, Pick 29. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Anthony Gould in the 222nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Trey Knox at slot 253 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
