There is reaching, and then there is DeMonte Capehart at the Round 6 slot. The Cowboys jumped the board by 85 and dared it to prove them wrong. The final tally is a middling C+.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Adding Stefon Diggs by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Junior Colson in pick No. 64 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Khyree Jackson in No. 87 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach for Matt Goncalves in pick 95; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nelson Ceaser at the 99th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jaylan Ford in the 173rd pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, DeMonte Capehart in Round 6, Pick 38 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
They reached into another round for Carson Steele, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
