The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Lachey: A-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Luke Lachey had no business being available in Round 7, Pick 22, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Myles Garrett leading the way. Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.

In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.1 · Pick 33 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 18
They let Nick Emmanwori come to them and pounced at pick 33. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Walter Nolen · DT · rank 17
The board fumbled Walter Nolen all the way to the 38th pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Trey Amos · CB · rank 50
Trey Amos at pick No. 67 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Marcus Mbow · OT · rank 51
Somehow Marcus Mbow was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.37 · Pick 101 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 83
You do not let a linebacker like Barrett Carter reach No. 101 and blink. They did not. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.1 · Pick 140 · Jared Wilson · C · rank 109
A offensive lineman of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 1 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.6 · Pick 145 · Joshua Farmer · DT · rank 123
They will replay Joshua Farmer at slot 145 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.11 · Pick 150 · Lathan Ransom · S · rank 110
Steal is underselling it; Lathan Ransom at the 150th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.9 · Pick 227 · Woody Marks · RB · rank 190
Woody Marks in Round 7, Pick 9 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.22 · Pick 240 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 198
Luke Lachey in the 240th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
