Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Steelers were there to profit. Dillon Thieneman, the No. 35 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 86th overall pick.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Chris Godwin deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Chris Bell slipping to the 53rd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Emmanuel Pregnon at slot 54 is the proof. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Lee Hunter in the 85th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Dillon Thieneman all the way to the Round 3 slot, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 116 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taylen Green at Round 6, Pick 35 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Jeff Caldwell in pick No. 224, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Tyren Montgomery, who had no business lasting to pick 230. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Jadon Canady still on the board at the 237th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
