The Chargers did not so much draft Jaheim Bell as overpay for him, 49 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
The Taylor-Demerson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
The De'Von Achane deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Cooper DeJean and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 21 they get a sticky cover corner, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Zach Frazier at the 61st pick, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Trey Benson in the 69th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jaheim Bell at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Mike Sainristil was still sitting there in pick 108, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy bit of business in the 139th overall pick, where Sataoa Laumea graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 183 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing LaDarius Henderson in slot 185. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Dadrion Taylor-Demerson still on the board at No. 199. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jordan Magee is a better player than Round 7, Pick 3 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Xavier Thomas at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
