The Cowboys lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They banked enough surplus on Johnson to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
Adding Brian O'Neill by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a load in the middle at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 23rd pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Chris Braswell in the 56th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid sticker price for Dominick Puni in No. 87, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Ray Davis at pick No. 108 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
No drama and no debate, Tommy Eichenberg went about where he belonged in slot 139. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Sione Vaki was the payoff at pick 174. A minor itch, scratched.
No edge and no loss on Garret Greenfield in pick No. 216; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cornelius Johnson at No. 233 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 24 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
