You can hear the double-takes from here. The Chiefs took Jordan Travis at the 111th overall pick, roughly 46 spots before his name belonged. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Irving. The veteran additions, DJ Moore chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 9th overall pick they get a security blanket over the middle at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In No. 18 they get a go-to option on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 32 they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
They barely believed it either: Darius Robinson still on the board at pick No. 64. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Payton Wilson at pick 75 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
You do not let a linebacker like Jeremiah Trotter Jr. reach the 95th pick and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Travis this early at pick 111. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Jalen McMillan in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bucky Irving in pick No. 133 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Javon Foster at the 143rd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 158th pick is the definition of value, full stop. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 172 with a little surplus value in Luke McCaffrey. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
